Weather Affecting Network Rail

You may have seen that weather warnings have been issued for Cornwall, Devon and Somerset for wind speeds of up to 60mph and heavy rain through tonight into tomorrow (Wednesday 12 April). So that train services can continue to operate safely tomorrow, Network Rail are imposing a 50mph speed restriction on some main lines and branch lines across the South West.

This will mean journeys will take longer and there may be late notice changes to schedules. If you or anyone you know is due to travel, please go to GWR.com/check before departing.

High winds can blow objects onto tracks, including trees, so they sometimes slow down trains to get you where you need to be safely. The train lines impacted will be:

  • Cornish main line, between Penzance and Plymouth (which will impact long distance journeys to London, Bristol and beyond)
  • St Ives Bay line, between St Erth and St Ives
  • Maritime line, between Truro and Falmouth
  • Atlantic Coast line, between Par and Newquay
  • Looe Valley line, between Liskeard and Looe
  • Tamar Valley line, between Plymouth and Gunnislake
  • Tarka line, between Exeter St David’s and Barnstaple

Should your train be delayed you may be entitled to Delay Repay compensation; find out more by going to www.GWR.com/delayrepay or https://www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk/customer-service/contact-us/delay-repay.

flood def

News from The Looe Flood Defence Project

Today the Centre of Looe floods up to 8 times a year – in less than 50 years time it will flood 60 times a year. By 2080 the town could see a  2104 style ” big storm” every single year.

Looe has an unwelcome history of flooding. During the fortnightly spring tides, the sea routinely reaches the top of the quayside walls. When a storm occurs at the same time, the water comes over the quay wall and floods the surrounding areas.  Environment Agency records show that currently the Centre of the town typically floods four to eight times a year, putting more than 200 properties at risk.

Looe has been “lucky” on several occasions since 2014 where surges have not combined with high tides. In February 2020 the flooding, although significant,  could have been so much worse.

The resilience of local residents, armed with sandbags and flood barriers, may well be enough to protect the town from all but the most severe storms today. However, the impact of climate change, with sea levels expected to rise by over one metre during the next 100 years, means that in less than 50 years most of the town will flood more often and to a greater depth, meaning that sandbags and flood boards become less effective.

This will see key areas such as the health centre, the police and fire stations, the main food stores and cafes and the fish market, the main roads, the Harbour and Millpool car parks and the railway line under water on storm and high tide days.

The only way to ensure the future of Looe for the children and grandchildren of the people who live here now is to adapt to rising sea levels and the increasing risk of flood, taking steps to manage the risk now to allow time for the community to adapt to the new normal.

Can you help?

We all enjoy the variety of events that are put on throughout the year in Looe which lots of our local organisations are involved in organising. Looe Town Council are involved in some as well as Looe Development Trust, East Looe Town Trust, West Looe Town Trust, Looe Harbour Commissioners, the Lions Club of Looe and our local churches and voluntary groups, and we all try to work together to support each others’ events.

Some of those involved in organising events over a number of years, have now decided to step down from their roles so we now urgently need new volunteers to come forward.

If you’re interested in helping with events and supporting the local community, please come along to a public meeting at St Martins Church Hall at 6pm on Monday 17th April.

No previous experience is necessary and working with established teams, you’ll have an opporutnity to develop your skills as well as having some fun!

Trees at Millpool Car Park

We were very pleased last week to see new trees being planted near the Millpool to replace those which were removed by Cornwall Council last year.

The new trees have been selected as more suitable for this location and have been planted in the grassy areas to avoid disturbance to the footway alongside the Millpool.

Cornwall Council have provided the attached notice which contains more information about the site and a link to their webpage about tree planting.

Public Toilets – Guildhall

Following the fitting of a new floor (thank you Cornish Flooring) along with extensive cleaning, repairs and decorating by our in-house team, the public toilets at the Guildhall in East Looe will be re-opening later today in time for Easter weekend.

This picture shows how pristine the Ladies facilities are looking for the start of the holiday season and our Cleaning & Maintenance staff will (as usual) be working hard during the busy season to keep these, and all the other public toilet sites in Looe clean and in good working order.

Network Rail Improvement Works

Network Rail improvement works taking place over Easter (Friday 7 April to Monday 10 April) and on Sundays 16, 23 April & 14 May. This work is vital to ensure the railway remains safe and reliable for operation.

On the dates affected, no trains will run between Reading and Westbury, or Reading and Basingstoke. Buses will replace trains and journey times may be different to normal, with journeys also taking longer than usual.

The long distance services between Devon & Cornwall will also be diverted and journey times will be extended by around 30 minutes.

Journey planners have been updated and Network Rail will also be making customers aware through social media, station posters, station and on-board announcements.

Customers should check before they travel on www.gwr.com/check and more information about the works, including where replacement buses will stop, is available at https://www.gwr.com/travel-information/travel-updates/planned-engineering/easter.
