Talland Bay Jack & Olivia

Meet Local Artist Olivia Croce.

Last week we caught up with Olivia Croce a local artist, art teacher, art coach and mother!

Olivia – Art Sessions started her art journey at GCSE where she met a fantastic art teacher. Olivia said ‘they dragged me through the up’s and downs of learning how to express yourself, slowly but surely learning technique and building my confidence. I made huge, wacky sculptures and it started to feel great. I realise now he showed me creative bravery, which is what I teach! I encourage emotion in art and pushing away your inner critic’.

Olivia also spoke about Looe, and the impact a wonderful sense of community can have. ‘It is so important because it gives you a sense of being, purpose and love, which is what is really important.

Olivia has some amazing events lined up, securing a partnership with Talland Bay hotel whereby guests can utilise the scenic grounds to reach creative freedom.

We spoke to Jack (featured left) who said ‘Olivia fits in at Talland perfectly and we are so excited to have her on board. Jack spoke about how refreshing it is to see a new culture opening up in Looe, he said: ‘I want people to realise Talland Bay Hotel is open to all, whether you are here for a coffee or staying in a suite we treat all our guests the same!’

If you want to keep up to date with Olivia you can follow her journey at www.oliviacroce.com or on Instagram at olivia_croce.

Business and Learning Initiatives

Looe Town Council wants to foster sustainable economic development in our town, supporting town businesses and working with the other town organisations.

In September 2021 the Council successfully applied for funding to pay for research to understand the current situation and what initiatives your Council could take to support the development of the town. This research was completed in August 2022 and can be accessed as an attachment below.

Earlier this year, another successful funding application enabled the Council to undertake a consultation with the community and local representatives of Looe’s business and learning community. This work is now complete, and a report has been produced. The report is included as an attachment below.

The report suggested that the Council start with small interventions focused on business skills initiatives, support and training for young people, cultural events and activities and working with local and sub regional partners. A working group has been meeting to see how we can deliver four pilot projects linked to business and skills and training for young people:

• Mentoring support for all types of local businesses
We know that there are many people in Looe with local, national and global business experience. We think that some of these will be happy to share their knowledge with local businesses on a voluntary basis. Our aim is to bring together ‘mentors’ and ‘mentees’ to help Looe businesses thrive.

• Supplementary training for school leavers and young adults
With no post-16 education in Looe, young people wanting to continue their learning have to travel. This means that some people either miss out on the opportunity or it doesn’t work out for them. We are looking at how we might support local training in key skills to plug this gap.

• Business, creative and professional development through the arts
Many artists live in Looe and our area. We want to see how we can support opportunities for people to create viable arts and creative businesses, adding to the already vibrant culture of the town.

• Training support for local hospitality businesses
Hospitality is central to the economy of Looe. We want to work with existing and new businesses to support training and development to sustain and further improve the great hospitality choices that our town already offers.

These are our ideas so far and we aim to run pilot projects with each of them in the coming months. We will learn if there is a demand, if the ideas make sense and how we can improve and develop them.

Summer 2024 Update

David Bryan

We send our condolences to Annette and the family and friends of David Bryan who died on Monday 29th July.

David served the community of Looe as a Town Councillor and was elected Mayor six times 1998-2000 and 2011-2015. He was also President of the Looe branch of the Royal British Legion.
Annette remembers two particular highlights of David’s time as Mayor, the visit of the then Duke and Duchess of Cornwall to Looe and persuading the Coca Cola Christmas lorry to stop in the town.

In 2022 David was appointed a Burgess in recognition of his significant contribution to the town.

The funeral will take place on Tuesday 20th August, 12.30 Glynn Valley Crematorium, PL30 4AP
All welcome, no flowers, donations to the Royal British Legion Looe Branch.

All at Looe Town Council are saddened by the loss of a man who was so dedicated to our town.

St Pinnock Band

St Pinnock Band at Traditional Furry Dance this evening!

Today’s the day of the traditional Furry Dance, a celebration that traditionally celebrates the passing of winter and arrival of Spring.

Nowadays the dance is used as a form of celebration, the word ‘furry’ deriving from the Cornish language fer, fair or feast.

We took the time to catch up with St Pinnock Brass Band who will be present at the event later.

Christie from St Pinnock band said:

‘The band is pleased to take part in any such celebration. The Furry dance in Looe holds a significant place in our annual calendar, marking the countdown to the much awaited carnival’. Our committed musicians invest significant time in rehearsing, performing and competing. The band is like a family to its members. As we look forward, St Pinnock is creating its own Junior band. In September we will bring our Brass Quintet to Looe Primary to show what we do and how the brass magic happens, maybe we find the next generation of players in Looe?’

You can watch the furry dance featuring St Pinnock from 7pm.

Happy Carnival week!
