Update Major Upgrades to Saltash Tunnel and Tamar Bridge Begin November 2024
Essential upgrade works on the Saltash Tunnel and surrounding A38 routes will start in late November 2024, aiming to improve safety and reliability. The project, led by National Highways, will modernize the tunnel’s control systems, lighting, and ventilation.
The work will be done in phases, starting with weeknight closures of the tunnel. In early 2025, speed restrictions and narrow lanes will be introduced westbound on the A38, followed by one-lane traffic in each direction through the tunnel during control system upgrades in mid-2025.
The Tamar Bridge will remain open with adjusted lane usage, including one lane for A38 traffic in each direction and a dedicated lane for Saltash Town.
National Highways is working with local stakeholders to minimize disruption during this critical project, expected to improve travel conditions for the region. Looe Town Council planning committee are in communication.
All inquiries should be directed to National Highways, with the Tamar Bridge managed separately by local councils. For more information visit: A38 Saltash Tunnel technology upgrade – National Highways
