Polperro Road Works Update

Following discussions last week, we are providing an update on the upcoming roadworks on Polperro Road. The works are now scheduled to commence on 4th November 2024.

For the latest information on roadworks in your area, please follow the link below: https://www.cornwall.gov.uk/transport-parking-and-streets/roads-highways-and-pavements/roadworks/

Looe Town Council will continue to share further updates and information as they become available.

South West Water Statement

South West Water have provided the following statement regarding the burst sewer,

“We experienced a burst sewer at Looe boat yard on 8th October. Our teams worked hard to put in place mitigations to control the spill which significantly reduced flows and thankfully, the spill stopped completely at 16.55 on 9th October. As a result, the Environment Agency has informed us that they removed the pollution alert at 15:49 today (10th October).

Our teams are working around the clock to repair a burst sewer pipe at the boat yard in Looe. We are using tankers to transfer flows away from the area to prevent spills to the environment and we will be installing an overland pipe as a temporary measure until a permanent fix can be carried out. We are sorry for any disruption and noise caused by the activity taking place on site.  The tankering may cause congestion to traffic in the following locations:  West Looe Road, the main Looe Bridge and the main road into West Looe, to ensure the safety of our teams and road users, traffic management remains in place.  We would like to thank local residents for their continued patience while we work to resolve this as quickly as we can.

We are not currently spilling to the environment and there are no pollution alerts in place from the Environment Agency.”

Road Updates from Cornwall Highways

We have two road updates to share with you. We understand that these updates are important to many of you. We are committed to keeping you informed and up-to-date.

The Following Information has been provided by Cornwall Highways.

Update One: [Rear of In Lieu, North Road, West Looe]

Start Date: Works to repair the retaining wall behind In Lieu on North Road started  on 30 September 2024. This project will be delivered in conjunction with the upcoming project on Polperro Road.

What works are taking place?

  • The repair work involves installing piles and anchors to support the highway and decrease pressure on the access steps below. To achieve this, a scaffolding platform will need to be constructed for the plant and machinery to sit upon. Once the piles are in place, the masonry facing the wall will be rebuilt, and the pile cap will be constructed before the parapet is rebuilt.
  • Please be aware the work activities may generate a moderate level of noise. To minimise disruption, the contractor will use their best efforts to reduce noise levels as far as reasonably possible.

Traffic management arrangements

  • The current (partial) road closure will remain during the piling works, and pedestrian access will also be restricted until the scaffolding on the road can be removed.
  • Working times will be between the hours of 7:30am to 5pm. Monday to Friday

Update Two [A387 Polperro Road & North Road Junction, West Looe]

What works are taking place?

The initial phase of the project will include removing weak sections of the retaining wall and excavating the area of slope failure further before the subsequent installation of the soil nailing system, which includes installing a geotechnical mesh to support the slope surface.

Following this, some stabilisation works will be undertaken on the retaining wall under the Little Westwood property before installing a pile and anchor system on North Road. These piles will support the highway and decrease the pressure on the retaining wall below.

This project aims to prevent future collapse and ensure the highway is in safe, serviceable condition and open to traffic.

Similar to the work on North Road, there is likely to be moderate noise from the construction activities. Once again, the contractor will make every effort to minimise noise levels and reduce disruption.

Traffic management arrangements

A road closure will be necessary to carry out the work. This is scheduled to be in place from Monday 4th November to Friday 20 December.

We understand that this may cause some disruption during the half-term period and want to assure you that we are looking at all options to ensure minimal traffic disruption. A meeting is being held this week to discuss the current permit and consider measures that could be taken to work with a revised start date of 4 November.

We recognise the challenges the businesses face and are fully committed to doing all we can to support the business community’s interests while these essential safety operations take place.

To meet the project deadline, work will need to be carried out during the day and into the evening from Monday to Friday, with the possibility of working on weekends where required. The proposed working times are between 7.30am and 11pm.

Access will be maintained for the school bus services. The transport team is looking at options for the local bus services that will not be able to go through the closure.

Prior to the start of any work bus service information will be available on the Cornwall Council, Go Cornwall Bus and Traveline South West websites.

Emergency access will be maintained between 7.30am and 11pm, while the workforce is on site.

Two-way traffic lights may need to be installed at the junction to ensure effective traffic flow between Quay Road and the bridge.

The road closure will remain in place for the duration of the project, and residents will need to use the signed diversion routes.

Only access into the road to Millpool Cottages from Bridgend will be permitted, and ‘businesses open as usual’ signage will be in place at Bridgend.

We are aware the Christmas lights switch will take place on Friday 29 November. Which includes a walked lantern parade where the use of the Millpool car parking facility will be much needed. We will work with the contractor to ensure measures are in place to support the safety and success of the event.

Once the contractor has confirmed all the necessary arrangements, we will provide a further update and be able to communicate the information to the wider community.

Looe Primary Academy Celebrates 40th Birthday!

Last Friday we celebrated with Looe Primary Academy who recently marked a milestone, celebrating its 40th birthday with a vibrant community event.

The festivities commenced with a performance by the renowned Polperro Fishermen’s Choir, setting a cheerful tone for the day. A special moment followed when Mr. Gibson, the very first person to step through the school’s doors in 1984, cut the event ribbon.

The celebration truly showcased the best of Looe’s community spirit, with key local groups like the RNLI Looe Lifeboat Station, Looe Library and Community Hub, The Lions Club of Looe and Looe Shedders making appearances. Families and attendees enjoyed a wide range of activities, including a ride on the Looe Land Train, pony rides, magic shows, and even the opportunity to meet alpacas, ensuring fun for all ages.

Looe Lions at the event

The success of the event was largely thanks to the efforts of Becky Marshall, Assistant Head and key organiser of the celebration, who warmly welcomed guests throughout the day. It was a fitting tribute to a school that has played a central role in the community for four decades!

South West Water on site at Millpool.

There are growing concerns among residents about tankers stationed at Millpool Car Park, which is affecting the local area.

South West Water is currently working on a burst sewer pipe in the boat yard at Looe. Tankers are being used to manage sewage flows while repairs are underway, which may cause traffic congestion on West Looe Road, the main Looe Bridge, and the main road into West Looe. The team apologizes for the inconvenience and appreciates the patience of local residents as they work to resolve the issue.

We are working hard to gain more information on the situation and will keep you updated via our website and social media.

A successful week for Looe Festival of Words Team!

From October 1st to 6th, Looe hosted the Festival of Words, a vibrant new event celebrating literature, writing, and the power of words. Supported by a network of local companies and organisations, including Hermitage Press, Feast Cornwall, and Looe Town Council, the festival brought together readers, writers, and lovers of language for a week of creativity.

The event, steered by local volunteers, showcased an array of events across multiple locations in the town. From author talks and writing workshops to a pop-up puppets and poetry readings, there was something for everyone! A standout moment was a visit from Sandy Johnson, BAFTA award-winner and director of Beyond Paradise.

We caught up with Mayor Cllr Tony Smith who said: I’m absolutely delighted with how the Looe Festival of Words turned out! The town’s been buzzing with creativity, and it’s been wonderful to see everyone come together. We’re so pleased Looe was chosen to host and hope it becomes a regular event in our calendar.

A huge congratulations to everyone involved in the Festival, fingers crossed we can do it all again next year!
