Introducing Looe’s Mayor & Deputy Mayor.

The annual town meeting took place on Tuesday, 20th May, marking a significant occasion in the civic calendar with the appointment of a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Cllr Stephen Remington was elected, in his acceptance speech he stated:

Thank you, Council, for electing me. I will work hard to justify your confidence. I was a regular visitor to family in Looe for almost half a century, since 1975, before retiring here in 2018. So, yes, an incomer but with fair claim to a lengthy connection, with meals eaten in long gone restaurants, clothes bought in Terry’s Fashions, bills paid to Caradon Council. But it was in 2021 that my arm was twisted to join the Town Council. Always the first question – how much time would I need to give? They lied of course. But I haven’t regretted a moment. I take on my role with humility and temerity. I would like our watchwords to be: Looe Town Council – how can we help?”

As his first official act, Mayor Remington invited nominations for the position of Deputy Mayor. We are delighted to confirm that Cllr Jamie Pearn born and raised in Looe, and bringing with him a strong blend of local knowledge and business experience was appointed Deputy Mayor for 2025–2026. We look forward to his leadership and vision contributing to the Council’s work in the year ahead.

Organisation of the Year:

This year’s Organisation of the Year award was presented to Looe in Bloom, in recognition of its tireless efforts in keeping the town beautiful and vibrant through floral displays and community engagement. The award was accepted on behalf of the group by Karen Glover. Huge congratulations to the entire Looe in Bloom team, this is a truly well-deserved award!

Citizen of the Year:

The Citizen of the Year award was given to Peter Friend, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the community. Though Peter was unable to attend the ceremony, his award was met with warm applause and admiration from all in attendance.

Mayor’s Appointments:

The ceremony also honoured those councillors stepping down from service. Special thanks were extended to Martin Gregory and Armand Toms who were made honorary town burgesses. In his acceptance speech Armand expressed his gratitude stating, ‘I love this town, and I will always love this town’.

As part of the ceremonial proceedings, Mayor StephenRemington made several key appointments:

Consorts: Vivienne Sullivan and Lynda Powell will serve as consorts for the mayoral year.

Chaplain: Ben Morgan-Lundie was re-appointed as Chaplain.

Sergeants- at- Mace: Two new Sergeants- at- Mace, Lee & Alfie from Looe Community Academy were appointed.

Mayor’s Cadet: 2024 Mayor’s Cadet Kayleigh Smith handed over the title to 2025-2026’s Cadet Jago Midwinter.

Once again, congratulations to all appointees and award recipients. We look forward to a successful and community focused year ahead

Upcoming Overnight Works at Bone Mill Sewage Pumping Station – May 22nd

We would like to inform residents and visitors that essential cleaning works will be carried out by South West Water at the Bone Mill Sewage Pumping Station and Storm Tank overnight on Thursday, 22nd May, starting from 5:00 PM and continuing through the night until the morning of Friday, 23rd May.

These works are necessary to ensure the continued safe and efficient operation of the pumping station and storm tank. As part of the process:

  • The clean will result in the temporary closure of approximately two-thirds of the Mill Pool Car Park.

  • While every effort will be made to minimise disruption, residents may notice an increase in noise and potential odours in the area. Odour control units will be in place to help mitigate this.

  • Tankering will be in place throughout the night to manage the debris from the clean.

  • In addition to the tankers the residents of the town may see light towers that will be on site.

On behalf of South West Water, thank you for your patience and understanding as they carry out this essential clean.

Commemorating VE Day.

Cllr Chris Harwood shared his VE Day commemoration, featuring Linda in a charming 1940s-style & a flag from an actual Battle Ensign RN warship! It’s wonderful to see the town taking time to reflect on this important occasion.

A message to protect our Mariners Garden.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve dedicated significant time and resource to planting and maintaining the Mariners Garden in preparation for the summer season. Our maintenance manager – Andy, alongside our Deputy Clerk Sharon, have gone above and beyond, personally watering the plants to ensure the garden is a bright and welcoming space for both locals and visitors.

We were eagerly anticipating seeing the garden in full bloom & sharing this good news with you! Nevertheless, we are saddened to report that several plants have slowly gone missing and as of late, multiple have been dug out or stolen.

This behaviour is deeply disheartening for all those who have worked hard on this project. Please remember that the upkeep of this garden is funded through the council tax contributions of Looe residents. Theft and vandalism not only undermine these efforts but also increase the burden on our community. Be advised: this area is monitored by CCTV.

Let us work together to respect and protect our shared spaces. Thank you for your continued support.
