What is a Safe Place?
A safe place is where people with a learning disability, Autism and/or Asperger’s can confidently go when they feel scared or worried when out and about the town. It is a building or organisation that is registered to the scheme.
People who might need to use Safe Places carry a Safe Places card. The card will have their emergency contact on it.
If they need help they can go to a Safe Place – they will see a Safe Places sticker in the window and can confidently ask staff for assistance.
Help that people might need
People might need help:
- If they have been attacked or feel threatened.
- If they get lost.
- If they have lost or had their belongings stolen.
- If someone they were meant to meet has not turned up.
- If they have missed their bus.
What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
- Autism and Asperger’s are part of the autistic spectrum, and are disabilities.
- People with Autism/Asperger’s are all different and will need different types
of support. - They find communicating difficult.
- They may also be sensitive to noise and light.
- About 1 in 3 people who have a learning disability have Autism.
Why do we need Safe Places?
People with a learning disability, Autism and/or Asperger’s are more likely to be vulnerable in the community because:
- People might not understand the way they behave.
- They may have difficulty with communication. For example, they may not be able to find their way around or solve problems.
- They may also have a physical disability.
- To reassure people with learning disabilities and / Autism and their families that they will be safe when out and about.
- They may get anxious if something goes wrong.
- People can be targeted and taken advantage of. They may think that they have to give people their money or belongings if they are asked.
What a Safe Place will do
- Put the Safe Place sticker in a clear place on a window/door.
- Tell new staff what it means to be a Safe Place.
- Offer appropriate training to staff.
- Be understanding.
- Give people time to talk.
- Listen to the person’s problem.
- Reassure the person.
- Ask them if they have a Safe Places card.
- Ring their emergency contact.
- If a crime has taken place they will call the police.
Confidentiality
A person’s confidentiality will be maintained unless:
- The person is at risk.
- They are at risk to themselves.
- They are a risk to other people.
