Looe Shedders build school bus for Looe Primary School!
Looe Shedders delivered a school bus to Looe Primary School yesterday!
The bus, measuring 1.2m x 2.4m was designed and constructed by volunteer members of Looe Shedders and is the result of many hours of work in Looe’s Community Hall using tools donated by local people. It was brought to the school in sections and quickly assembled in the playground before being unveiled to pupils.
“Working together on projects such as these helps our members develop lasting friendships and learn new skills from each other. It gives us a sense of pride in doing something useful for the community,”said Chris Roy, Looe Shedders’ chairman.
“When you got in touch to tell us that you’d made something for us I had no idea about the quality,” said Janine Waring, the school’s headteacher. “It’s so hard for us sometimes to buy things because they’re so expensive and they often don’t last very long but this has been made with lots of love, it’s for children in your community. We know it matters to you as much as it does to us and for that reason we will treasure it and make sure that the children enjoy it every day they are here. I can’t thank you enough.”
About Looe Shedders
Looe Shedders is modern-day manifestation of a concept called “Men’s Sheds” that started in Australia more than 30 years ago and has evolved into a global movement comprising thousands of “Sheds”. These are community spaces set up for meetings, learning and socialising, but with the additional benefit of workshops where people can make new friends, develop new interests and skills and in the process enjoy working on projects that benefit everyone in the community. Looe Shedders was founded three years ago but only really got started after the Covid pandemic. We now have more than 50 male and female members and an amazing number of tools and equipment donated by local people. We hope to build our own shed but at present members meet for two mornings a month at St. Martin’s Community Hall. We also run a “Repair Cafe” once a month where we mend broken household items brought in by the public for free, to enable recycling rather than scrapping.
Looe Shedders is currently applying for charitable status; it is a Community Interest Company (CIC) at present.
