On 29th August, The Young Fishermen Network hosted a commercial fishing taster day at Looe!
In accordance with the network’s website, the average age of fishermen in the UK is 57! The day was part of a wider initiative to encourage a younger generation of fishermen and mitigate the barriers they face.
The taster day replicated an event that previously took place in Newlyn introducing a series of activities including:
• A chat about information on fishing, how to get started and how to apply to training courses.
• A tour of Looe harbour and tour into Pengelley’s fishmonger, learning about the process of the catch.
• Learning how to tie a variety of knots and splices used in the industry.
• Safety session on lifejackets, PLB, EPIRB’s.
