Message from the Mayor: Celebrating 50 Years of Twinning with Quiberon

October 2026 sees the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the original twinning agreement between Looe and Quiberon.

We are honoured that a delegation, led by Patrick Le Roux, Mayor of Quiberon, will be visiting Looe on 10th and 11th October and we will be arranging a great Looe welcome for them – rain or shine!

The weekend will start with a flag raising ceremony, open to all, at our flagpoles by the War Memorial at 10:00 on Saturday 10 October. Why not come along to this once in a generation event and share in this celebration when five different flags will be raised, some specially designed for the occasion?

We also plan a walking and tasting tour – many thanks to the businesses who will welcome our visitors for a taste of the best Looe has to offer. The Quiberon delegation will go on boat trips around the island, weather conditions permitting. Receptions are being given by East Looe Town Trust and the Harbour Commission and there will be a civic lunch attended by the High Sheriff of Cornwall.

Above all, we want this weekend to be the launchpad for a thoroughly modern twinning between our two towns. Quiberon and Looe chose each other fifty years ago because of our many similarities – population size, marriage to the sea, popular tourist destination, rich heritage and sense of community.

Now perhaps, added to all that, we share modern challenges in a turbulent world where things may be less clear than they were half a century back. We believe that solutions may be found closer to home, communities working together to confront the impact of global events, and we believe that partnership with a friendly and similar community across the water can add to our ideas and our optimism.
