Edwina Hannaford granted Freedom of Looe
At an Extraordinary meeting of Looe Town Council on 4th December 2023, Councillors unanimously agreed to grant the Honorary Freedom of the Town to Cllr Edwina Hannaford in recognition of her many years of meritorious service to Looe; her service as a Councillor, both for Looe and for Cornwall, and as Mayor of Looe; and for her many charitable and community activities.
This is the first time that Freedom of the Town has been granted in Looe for many years and it is the highest honour a town can give to someone of value in its community. The origins of the award in England go as far back as 1272, and holders in the past were granted special status and privileges like rights of pasture and control of trade. Nowadays, however, the role is mainly ceremonial.
To mark the granting of her Honorary Freedom of the Town, Edwina was presented with a ceremonial scroll. Pictured left to right are Cllr Stephen Remington (Deputy Mayor); Cllr Tony Smith (Mayor of Looe), Cllr Edwina Hannaford, Simon Hannaford.
