LOOE – QUIBERON TWINNING ASSOCIATION
TWINNING CHARTER – Signed 3rd October 1976
The Mayor’s of Looe and Quiberon jointly declare that the twinning of our two Towns is intended to promote contacts between our peoples and knowledge of each others way of life, to develop educational, cultural and sporting exchanges with a special emphasis on our young people.
We solemnly declare in the name of our Citizens our willingness to develop a sympathetic understanding, mutual respect and friendship between the inhabitants of Looe and Quiberon knowing that this will help to cement the ties between our two nations.
In the summer of 1976 four Looe Town Councillors, Arthur Taylor, Edward Walke, Gerald Nancollas and Peter Weldon and their respective wives visited Quiberon and decided that Quiberon was the ideal town for Looe to twin with, having a similar population, and fishing and tourism as their main and economy, and indeed way of life.
A Charter was duly drawn up and signed by the two Mayor’s and this now hangs in the Council Chamber in the Looe Guildhall.
Over the 32 years of the association many people from Looe have visited Quiberon to enjoy the friendship and hospitality offered to them. Many visitors from Quiberon have also come to Looe and every year Madame Le Gac from St Ann’s College, Quiberon has brought a large class of 13 – 14 year old children to help with their English studies, sadly this year, when they visited us in April, it will probably be the last time as Madame Le Gac has now retired and on her last visit here the Mayor, Cllr Ron Overd made Madame Le Gac an Honorary Burgess of Looe in recognition of her contribution to the Twinning Association.
Over the years talented musicians and performers such as St Pinnock Band, Looe School Band, Looe Valley Singers and our now retired Town Crier (who has been made and Honorary Burgess of Looe) have had the pleasure and priveledge to be invited to Quiberon to take part in the Quiberon Choir Festival and has been enjoyed by all including the Mayor of Looe who is, of course, always invited too.
Quiberon is a small fishing town on a five mile long peninsula in south west France which runs out into the atlantic ocean. It offers lovely sandy beaches, there are several ferry boats to take visitors to the off shore islands each day, good restaurants and hotels, it even has its own small airfield. There are Brittany Ferries from Plymouth to Roscoff and it is a five hour drive from there on very good roads.
Sadly the Twinning Association is now in suspension even though several attempts have been made to re-invorgorate it, the latest being by Looe Town Council. If anyone out there is willing to help us revitalise the association please contact us!
